A Tool for Interactive Charging Station Placement

Holistic city-scale traffic simulations like SEMSim are powerful tools. As discussed in our previous posts, they can be used for various studies like determining the locations for sensors for Intelligent Transportation Systems or planning for how the charging infrastructure of a city is to be developed. However, using  simulations like SEMSim Traffic and SEMSim Power as they are traditionally used requires the user to have a high level of technical skill and time not just domain expertise. With this in mind, at TUM CREATE, we have experimented with different interfaces and tools that could make SEMSim more accessible to the right people. 

This is made possible by the IEEE standard High Level Architecture (HLA) that is used for coupling the different components of SEMSim. It is possible to not just extend SEMSim with new applications that visualize the information from SEMSim in a clear and useful manner; it is also possible to send back interactions from the visualizer to the simulation, simulate the effect of this interaction and give instant feedback to the user on the result of this interaction.

In the below video we demonstrate one such tool that was developed for helping in planning for charging infrastructure. It presents the user with the status of electric vehicles in a future Singapore over the course of a day; the user can interactively place charging stations and immediately see the impact that placing the charging station would have on the electric taxi population. Tools similar to these are essential for Modelling and Simulation to truly become the third paradigm that scientists have expected it to be.
