Battery Ageing Model Calibration using Online-Monitoring Data

Intelligent Control of Energy Storage in Smart Grids

BACKGROUND

Smart grids rely on the intelligent behavior of individual consumers and generators. In this project we are developing a system which intelligently controls how mobile or stationary energy storages are charged and discharged to support the stability of power grids. One objective of the project is to realize a technology for the integration into electric vehicles (EV) to perform smarter charging and intelligent Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) dispatch.

OBJECTIVE & TASKS

You will be part of a small research team addressing different aspects of this topic. To avoid significant damage to the battery, the system needs to know the cost of cycling energy through the battery. These costs depend on a variety of factors and can be estimated using empirical battery ageing models. To improve this estimate, a battery online-monitoring system is being developed which allows tracking the battery’s state of health. The objective of this thesis/internship is to develop a mechanism which uses this online-monitoring data for the real-time calibration of an empirical battery model. For this purpose the following tasks should be accomplished:

  • Definition of an interface between the empirical battery model and the data generated by the online-monitoring system
  • Development of an algorithm to calibrate the battery model using online-monitoring data
  • Implementation of the improved battery ageing model into the existing system
  • Testing of the concept in a case study for V2G in Singapore
